How Much Coffee Should You Use Per Cup?

A good starting point for drip coffee is about 1 tablespoon of ground coffee per 5 ounces of water. Most coffee makers call a “cup” about 5 ounces, not a full 8-ounce measuring cup.

For a standard 12-cup coffee maker, that usually means about 12 tablespoons or around 72 grams of coffee. If you like a stronger cup, increase the coffee slightly. If you prefer a milder cup, use a little less.

French press and pour over coffee often use a slightly different ratio because the brew method changes how the flavor extracts. Cold brew concentrate uses much more coffee because it is designed to be mixed with water, milk, or other ingredients after brewing.

For the best flavor, start with fresh roasted coffee, use clean water, and grind your coffee close to brewing whenever possible.

Never Run Out Of Fresh Roasted Coffee

Once you know how much coffee you use, the next step is making sure you always have enough fresh roasted coffee on hand.
